II
Terraced house. c1825. Probably designed by Amon Wilds and
Charles Augustin Busby. Stucco, with roof of tile.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys and attic over basement, stepping down to
2 on the return; the lower section treated as a separate
block, but, in fact, attached. 3 window range, 6 on right
return. Main elevation treated as a full-height segmental bay
with quoins to either side. All windows flat arched with
entablatures. Ground floor has banded rustication. Balcony to
first floor, with cast-iron brackets and railings. Second
floor entablature has a denticulated cornice. Entablature and
blocking course over attic, this entablature continues on
return. Cast-iron balconettes to second floor windows and
central bay window on ground floor of main elevation.
Flat-arched entry on the return elevation; this has over- and
sidelights. The glazing bars taken together form a single
geometric pattern of the early to mid C20. This is set within
a round-arched recess, from which a porch with a round-arched
canopy projects. This porch is supported on panelled console
brackets springing from panelled pilasters with acanthus leaf
capitals. The first 3 bays of this elevation have flat-arched
windows; this section is set off from the rest of the return
by quoining rising through 4 storeys. At this point the wall
surface of the return sets back, for one bay, and then steps
out again. The effect is to divide this long elevation into 2
sections, one an extension of the main elevation, the other a
2 storey block. This low block has its own cornice and corner
quoins. The basement window is camber arched, the rest are
flat arched. A flight of stairs in the join between the 2
blocks leads down to a basement entry recessed within an
elliptical arch. The first and second floor windows above are
round arched. Dormers to Marine Parade are round arched, to
return flat. Stacks to party walls and centre of return
facade. Rails to stairs and area.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
