Terraced houses, converted into flats. c1850. Stucco. Roof
obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over half basement and a C20 roof addition
of no architectural distinction. Nos 155 and 157 two windows
each, No.156 3-window range. Italianate style. Although the
block was built as 3 distinct units, it is designed as if it
were a single house, No.156 forming the centre of the
composition. Centre unit projects slightly from sides to give
a point of emphasis; rusticated pilaster strips to the corners
and end walls of centre bay; across entire elevation and
return to Belgrave Place (qv) is bracketed cornice with a
shield frieze; likewise the ground floor of the block is
treated as chamfered rustication forming keystone lintel to
the window heads; this rustication carried across the return.
All openings flat arched unless otherwise stated. Continuous
cast-iron railings to balconies on side units and to the
centre unit's verandah, which has cast-iron stanchions and a
metal concave roof. All first-floor windows are round arched
with a springing band continuous across the block and
architraves to arches only; spandrels ornamented with one
round shield each. Entablature between first and second
floors, frieze to end units is a Vitruvian scroll and to
centre round shields. Round-arched second-floor windows repeat
the pattern of the first floor but are unornamented. Sashes of
original design: to ground and first floors of No.155, 4 x 4
and 6 x 6 respectively, all with margin lights; and to second
floor of No.157, 6 x 6. The entrances to Nos 155 and 156 are
flat arched with overlights and reached by steps. The entrance
to No.157 is on the return elevation and forms a conspicuous
features of the block: steps to flat-arched entrance with
overlights of decorative glazing bars, set under a prostyle
porch consisting of a pair of fluted Tuscan columns and
responds; side bays filled in; entablature with frieze of
laurel wreaths and inscribed "Belgrave House"; balustrade
above and glassed-in verandah. To the right a full-height
segmental bay, one window on each floor. Round-arched windows
with architraves supported on Tuscan pilasters near corner and
rear of return. Quoin strips to corner and end wall of first
and second floor. Sashes of original design to ground-floor
bay, 3 x 3, with windows to the right, 4 x 4 with margin
lights; to first and second floors of bay, 8 x 8 with margin
lights; to attic, 3 x 6; in range to right of bay 4 x 4, 2 x
4, and 6 x 4 all with margin lights to ground, first and
second floors respectively. Cast-iron balconies to all
first-floor windows except that in bay.
