Terraced houses. Early C19, added to in mid to late C19.
Stucco. Roofs obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: No.159 3 storeys and 2-storey attic over basement,
the rest 3 storeys and attic over basement. 2 windows each;
the return of No.159 to Belgrave Place has a 5-window range.
Up steps to flat-arched entrance on Nos 160 and 161, the
former of C20 and the latter with overlight of mid to late C19
date. Ground floor of each treated as banded, chamfered
rustication topped by cornice band. Tripartite window with
keyed lintel to left of entrances to Nos 160 and 161. All
windows are flat arched with projecting sills. Each unit has a
first-floor balcony, that to No.159 supported by thick
brackets moulded in stucco, to No.161 by cast-iron brackets;
both enclosed by cast-iron railings; balcony to No.160 much
altered. Floor-to-ceiling openings to first floors. Storey
band between first and second floors. Cornice between second
floor and attic, and another between attic and parapet; a
second attic storey added to No.159. Some sashes of original
design: 3 x 6 to second-floor windows of No.161; 8 x 8 to one
basement window of No.161 and to 2 basement windows of No.159.
Return to No.159: entrance in centre-window range is flat
arched with overlight, framed by Tuscan pilasters and
entablature; second entrance to the rear of the return; window
to right of main entrance blocked as are all windows in this
range, except for that in the second attic storey; to the left
of the entrance is a full-height segmental bay with single
window to each floor; first-floor windows in the third- and
5th- ranges have architraves which continue below the sill and
end at the storey band between the ground and first floors;
the spandrels enclosed by this unusual feature are blank;
cast-iron balcony to first-floor window at corner, which is
floor-to-ceiling. Sashes of original design to bay on return:
ground and first floors 6 x 6, attic 3 x 3; above entrance 6 x
6; first floor window at corner 4 x 4. Stacks to party walls.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Railings to stairs and areas.
Nos 155-165 Marine Parade (qv) form a group with Nos 1-17
Belgrave Place (qv).
