Corner house, now restaurant and offices. Early to mid C19,
shop front inserted in late C19. Stucco, shop front in brick.
Roof obscured by parapet.
EXTERIOR: 4 storeys over basement. Curved corner of one-window
range. 3-window range to Market Street and 5-window range to
Bartholomews. Flat-arched entrance set in corner and
incorporated into late C19 shop; the entrance set in a
segmental-arched niche which is topped by a free adaptation of
a scrolled gable. The tympanum of this is filled with masks
and acanthus scrolls. Continuous dentil cornice across the top
of the shop front. Each shop window is framed by panelled
piers ornamented with strapwork. Elliptical-arched entrance to
the Bartholomews elevation has spandrels with floral sprays.
Above all windows are flat arched, with those to the second
and third floors having moulded, projecting sills. Moulded
storey bands between each upper floor and across the top.
Entablature with dentil cornice. Many windows have sashes of
original design. In the corner, on the second and third
floors, 3 x 6 sashes. Market Street elevation: 3 x 6 to
third-floor window first-window range. Bartholomews elevation:
top sash of 6 panes to first-floor window in second-window
range; in 4th window range, from first to third floors
respectively, 6-pane top sash, 3 x 6 and 3 x 6; in
fifth-window range 6-pane top sash to first floor and 3 x 6 to
second-floor window. Fire in June of 1992 has damaged the
latter windows. The remaining windows to Bartholomews are
blocked. Blocked windows on Market Street include all in
third-window range and second- and third-floor windows in
second-window range. Stacks to outer wall near corner.
