GV II

Houses, now shop. Late C19. Stucco scored to imitate
ashlaring; parapet to roof covered in asphalt and obscuring
the roof. Single storey. Ground floor of both now taken up by
a single shop. Continuous entablature ends at extreme party
walls in fluted bracket stops. The shop-window sash to No.40
also dates to the late C19; that to No.39 has been much
altered in this century.
The pair form part of a most important sequence of C18 and C19
buildings with Nos 1-12, 22-32, 36-38, 41, and 43-53 Meeting
House Lane (qv), which is the centre of the Old Town known as
The Lanes. Included for group value.
