Thelsford Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse. C17 with C18 and C19 additions. Timber-frame with
brick infill, part roughcast or painted infill, on brick and
stone plinth; brick additions; gabled tile roofs with brick
end stacks and stack to one side of ridge.
PLAN: L-plan plus C18 south wing and later additions to north.
EXTERIOR: west, garden, front of 2 storeys; 3-window range.
Gable end of timber-framed wing has roughcast infill, and
enriched bracketed barge-boards with finial; entrance to right
has doorcase with bracketed open pediment to 4-panel door (2
panels glazed); canted bay window to left has hipped tile roof
over 1:2:1-light small-paned glazing with iron opening
casement; C20 window above; C18 brick wing to right has stone
plinth and applied timber-frame and roughcast;
segmental-headed window to ground floor has 3-light glazing
with iron opening casement; similar 4-light casement above and
gabled roof dormer with enriched barge-boards and finial to
2-light small-paned casement; external end stack with offsets.
Small wing to left has applied timber-frame and small window;
ridge stack and brick lean-to to end.
South front has timber-frame over brick ground floor; entrance
to right of centre, and 2 windows with 3-light and 4-light
casements; first floor has 3 hipped half-dormers with
cross-casements with iron opening casements; lean-to
re-entrant block and small-paned casements to C18 wing.
Stack to rear of ridge and large external end stack, raised in
C19, with offsets. Lower slate-roofed wing to right end has
entrance to projecting return.
North side has timber-framed wing with brick infill and C20
casements; small C19 gabled wing to right has segmental-headed
windows, some exposed timber-framing has 4-light casement, and
catslide outshut to left of gabled wing to right end has
3-light casement; outshut to right end wing has 2-light window
in former segmental-headed entrance, with leaded casement
above.
Slate-roofed wing to left end has timber lintels to casements
and re-entrant porch; single-storey brick wing with hipped
tile roof to end.
INTERIOR: stop-chamfered spine beams; exposed square framing
to cross walls; one room with large fireplace with cornice;
roof has exposed trusses with 3 struts between tie beam and
collar; C18 wing has wide floorboards and small late C19
fireplace.
