SP25NE HAMPTON LUCY 1457-1/10/192 Charlecote Mill (that part in 06/02/52 Hampton Lucy CP)

Water mill. Mid to late C18 with some C19 alterations. Brick laid to Flemish stretcher bond; gabled old tile roof. PLAN: T-plan, with two undershot wheels and associated machinery flanking central working area. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; symmetrical 5-window range. Top cogged cornice. Entrance and loading door above both set in segmental-headed opening with heavy pegged frame to paired and studded plank doors. Ground floor has segmental-headed windows with 2-light small-paned glazing; 4 similar first-floor windows, 2 with opening casements. Weatherboarded gabled lucombe with 2-light small-paned casement. Rear has had eaves raised in later C19, probably to accommodate extra grain; central wing with segmental-headed window with 3-light frame with small-paned opening casement to ground and first floors and attic; to each side a lean-to wheel chamber with segmental-headed opening, that to right having timber lintel over paired studded doors, segmental-headed entrance with studded plank door in heavy frame to left and small opening with projecting shaft and wheel above.

INTERIOR: Stone flag floor to ground floor; heavy beams support plank floors, all in elm; two straight flights of stairs; heavy queen-post roof (to allow passage of sack trollies), each truss having apex supported by jowled king post set on collar. Two undershot water wheels, the paddles and associated sluice gates renewed in 1970s. Wooden upright shafts and wheels are held within two heavily-constructed hurst frames, these having boarded cladding to their inner ground-floor faces with meal spouts taking flour from first-floor millstones; grain bins accessed through hatches on upper floor. HISTORY: Attached to Charlecote Mill House (qv) and prominent in views from Charlecote Park. On the site of a mill listed in Domesday. This is an exceptionally complete example of a large symmetrically-planned lowland mill, its scale and proportions being typical of the manner in which mills developed in the C18.
