Manor house, now 2 houses. c1550, believed to be to order of
Ambrose Dudley, Earl of Warwick, with later alterations and
restorations, and conversion of c1980. Close-studded
timber-framing with arched braces to first floor and
reddish-brown brick infill on lias stone plinth and with
plain-tile roofs. U-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic, 3-window range, of which the
outer bays are taller and gabled. Plinth. Central entrance has
C20 plank doors in moulded wood frame within C20 open-sided
porch. Ground floor has 4-light wood mullioned windows. First
floor: outer bays have 4-light wooden mullioned windows,
3-light to centre. Attic to left gable has single-light
casement. All windows are renewed and have lead cames. Steeply
pitched gabled roofs, ridge stack has cluster of 3 diagonal
shafts, massive brick lateral stack to right. Further entrance
to right return.
INTERIOR: left part has extensive exposed close-studded
timber-framing to ground and first floors. Chamfered beams to
most rooms have embellished run-out stops, first-floor left
room has chamfered beam with roll-moulding and ogee stops.
Small panelling to first-floor left room and 4-centred stone
fireplace with roll-moulding, to either side are panelled
cupboards with butterfly hinges. Exposed joists.
Roof: some exposed purlins, rafters and wind braces to some
parts. To right part: exposed beams, some with double
roll-moulding, exposed joists, remains of queen strut roof
exposed to attic.
