Nos.1 and 2, Heath End Cottages
II
2 cottages. C16 or early C17 with early C19 alterations and
addition. Timber-frame with brick infill on stone plinth and
brick rebuilding, part with timber-frame with plastered
infill; tile roof with brick stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Long range with 2 gabled wings to front
and one to rear; gable facing, front to right. Wing to left
has close-studded framing with plastered infill to jettied
first floor with ovolo-moulded bressumer over brick
underbuilding, left end also has close-studded framing to
first floor; C19 brick gabled wing to right; some timber-frame
on stone plinth visible in C20 sun room to right end. Entrance
to return of C19 wing has plank door.
Each wing has window to each floor with 2-light casement, some
with iron opening casement; small first floor window between
wings over C20 infill. Lateral stack to return of C19 wing and
stack in roof slope to left end.
Right return has small windows flanking end stack; exposed
truss to gable.
Left return has wall post to left angle and some framing to
gable with enriched bargeboards; ground floor has
segmental-headed window with brick label mould over 3-light
casement with decorative glazing with elongated octagons;
first floor has 2-light wood-mullioned window with bracketed
canopy.
Rear has some timber framing and blocked first-floor window to
right of long wing with cross-axial stack and some timber
framing; end with tie beam and part of wall post, and later
brick to gable; right return to lane has former wall plate
over segmental-headed entrance with plank door and
segmental-headed window similar to that to ground floor of
left return; re-entrant porch has plank door.
To left of wing a porch and some exposed timber framing.
Varied casements to rear.
