north of nave of Church of St Peter
GV II
Group of 13 headstones and a cross. 12 headstones mainly
c1700, and C18, otherwise C20 cross and stone. The westernmost
has elliptically-arched head with central winged cherub-head
in sunk roundel. Then 2 approx. 2m to its south-east, a
round-arched headstone with winged cherub-head to upper centre
and divided rectangular inscription tablet; adjacent a
rectangular tablet with moulded frame and fielded inscription
tablet surmounted by broken swan-neck pediment with central
winged cherub-head.
To south again a rectangular headstone with carved scroll
decoration to head forming shallow broken swan-neck pediment
with central circular motif inscribed `Here lies the body of
Sarah/ ... daughter of Richard/ and Hannah Horsley of ...'
(d.1768). To its east a pair of rectangular headstones both
with moulded frames and fielded inscription tablets, and both
surmounted by broken swan-neck pediments with central
cherub-heads and festoons. To their south a headstone with
central oval inscription tablet surmounted by broken swan-neck
pediment and central cherub-head, with festoons and foliage
fronds to the sides.
Then to east again 4 similar headstones with round-arched
heads, all with eroded inscription tablets; then a headstone
with 2 inscription tablets with roll-moulding between and each
with round-arched head.
All the listed items in the Churchyard form a good group with
Church of St Peter (qv).
