The Mill House
II
Corn mill and miller's house, now house. C17 miller's house
with wing to right probably mid C18; mill building to left
c1867, and later additions and alterations including
extensions c1960s. Timber-framed miller's house, encased in
reddish-brown brick with reddish-brown brick mill building on
stone plinth, gabled plain-tile roofs.
EXTERIOR: original 3-bay house of single-storey with attic,
with range added to right, now with extensions to both sides.
Mill has 2 storeys with basement and attic. Jowled studs
exposed to rear of original block. Otherwise entrance now to
C20 addition. 2- and 3-light C20 casement windows throughout
with glazing bars. Ridge stacks.
INTERIOR: house has exposed small square panels of
timber-framing to one wall, chamfered beams to ground floor
and inglenook fireplace with bressumer beam; further exposed
timber-framing, wall plate and purlins to upper floor.
Mill: adjoins via C20 glazed passage. Entrance to basement
through a 4-panel door. 2-light C20 casement windows under
elliptical arches. Hoist housing to front, upper stage has
window. To right end a mill wheel with plaque inscribed
'ERECTED FOR G F MUNTZ ESQ / BY / R SUMMERS TANWORTH / 1867';
bressumer beam; further exposed timber-framing, wall plate and
purlins to upper floor. Mill workings intact, grinding stones
marked 'R. SUMMERS'.
This remained a working mill until c1940.
