Farmhouse with associated outbuildings. Probably earlier C16
with later alterations and extensions including c1980s
restorations and conversion of outbuildings to domestic use.
Timber-framed with later brick nogging; tiled roofs, hipped to
left, otherwise gable-ended. 4-units in series with 2 wings to
rear.
EXTERIOR: the house appears originally to have consisted of a
2-bay open hall with storeyed end. The right-hand (or
south-east) hall bay was probably floored first and jettied
slightly into the remaining open bay: evidence confused by
disturbance caused by the later insertion of a stack c1700
(since removed) and associated with former winder stairs to
the rear. The north-west bay of the hall contains a number of
smoke-blackened roof timbers. In the C17 the remaining open
hall bay was floored, the stack inserted between the 2
right-hand units forming a lobby entrance, and the brick
infilling added.
The 2 rear wings (much altered) are of different dates, that
to the rear of the south-east hall bay possibly c1676-99.
Timber-framing: small panelling with curved and straight
angle-braces; queen-post roof with V-struts above collar.
Front: irregular 5-window range; much of the framing is
visible. No original windows (mostly 1-, 2- and 3-light
casements, one top-hung, one bowed, and one sash, all with
glazing bars) but one (first floor, to right of porch) may
occupy an early window opening. Framed gabled porch to left of
centre with cambered lintel to outer doorway (the timbers
probably reused); tiled roof. Substantial plinth mostly
obscured by a raised walkway approached by steps to the left,
the wall rebuilt in late C20.
Both returns with much exposed framing, that to the right with
one 2-light casement to each floor, that to the left with late
C20 first-floor door approached by open timber stairs.
Rear: 2 gabled wings of slightly different heights and width,
and masonry joint between; Victorian window openings with
cambered brick arches, all with later 3-light casements with
glazing bars. Hipped porch to right. Between the wings and the
north-west bay (where further framing is visible) the
elevation projects under a catslide roof.
The outbuildings immediately to the north-west are
contemporary and formed part of the farmstead.
A single-storeyed framed structure under hipped roof links the
house with the remnants of the barn of similar construction to
the house. 2 bays only with end framing visible to north-east,
Victorian brickwork to south-west. Both these structures have
undergone considerable internal modification, and 2-light
casement windows have been inserted.
INTERIOR: noted as having framing intact and largely visible
(partially removed from extreme north-east section). Chamfered
ceiling beams; a mullioned window to rear first floor obscured
internally by later wing. Ogee braces to open-hall central
truss; changes at first floor level between former hall and
storeyed ends. Some planked and ledged doors. Flag floor to
entrance hall.
