GV II

Also known as: Merriman's Hill Farmhouse TANWORTH LANE.
Farmhouse, now house. Probably late C15 with reconstruction
and additions of late C16/early C17 (including massive stack),
with C19 additions. Restored 1987-8. Timber-framed with
reddish brick infill to right range and reddish brick, on blue
lias stone plinth in parts and with plain-tile roofs with
internal and massive right lateral stack.
EXTERIOR: single square-bay core with further ranges butted
against it, forming main range with cross-wing to right and
infill. One storey and attic and 2 storeys; 2-window range.
Entrances to left and off-centre have C20 plank doors. 2- and
3-light C20 casements throughout with fixed-light diamond
window below gable apex. Catslide roof descends to left with
window and dormer above. Square-panel framing in cross-wing.
Massive external stack to right end. Further lateral stacks.
On right end are C20 French doors and further casements in a
section of square-panel framing on stone plinth. C20
rebuilding on left end. Further framing and C20 conservatory
to rear.
INTERIOR: open fireplace with part of hood remaining. Massive
close-studding in partition walls, some timbers are splayed.
Tie-beam trusses. Roof probably C17.
Forms a group with barn range approx. 20m west (qv).
HISTORICAL NOTE: The Wootton Wawen Report concluded that the
house incorporates substantial elements of an earlier,
probably C15 building, re-used in a total reconstruction
c1700. The relatively sumptuous sections of earlier frame
which survive strongly suggest that the first building would
have been larger than the reconstruction.
(The Wootton Wawen Project: Bassett R and Rosser G: Interim
Report: University of Birmingham: 1983-1989: 19-21).
