GV II

Pair of lodges flanking gates and gate piers with ashlar wall
to each side, stretching a total of 33.5m. c1750 by Phillips
and Shakespear for James West; gates of c1856 by George Clark.
Stucco with limestone ashlar dressings and pyramidal slate
roofs; cast-iron gates and limestone ashlar walls. Rococo
Gothic Style
EXTERIOR: small square lodges have canted angles and small
projections to outer sides; paired central gates with
octagonal piers with flanking single gates; flanking walls
curve outwards to octagonal end piers. Each lodge has impost
band and top cornice with crenellated parapet; front, inner
side and rear have pointed recesses; outer side has small
projection with pointed recess.
Front has ogee-headed window with grille and 3/6 sash with
intersecting top glazing bars, tiny cusped ogee outer windows;
inner side has entrance with 6-panelled door, 4 of the panels
fielded, remainder flush-panelled.
Rear has ogee-headed window as to front. Angles have
quatrefoil recesses. Tall round stacks with some enrichment.
Lodge to right has later lean-to outshut to outer side.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: enriched gates have armorial bearings and
crests, gate piers have caps, that to right retaining lantern.
Walls have plain coping and each has 2 square piers and an
octagonal end pier, all with caps.
