GV II

Stables. Dated 1753 with C20 alterations. For James West. Red
brick with hidden hipped roof and cupola with clock.
Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: north front: 2 storeys; symmetrical 9-window range.
Brick plat band and plain stone-coped parapet. Group of 3
central segmental-headed carriage entrances with triple key
blocks and segmental overlights over paired plank doors, and
spur wall to either side. To left of centre a symmetrical
arrangement of segmental-headed entrance with key block over
stable door flanked by high segmental-headed windows with
6-paned pivoted lights and a window with rubbed brick flat
arch with key block over 6/6 sash to each end. Similar
arrangement to right of centre, but with an entrance inserted
to right of carriage entrances. 1st floor has segmental-headed
windows with key blocks over 6-pane glazing. Square turret has
painted clock face to 2 sides, with initials: J W and date:
1753. Octagonal drum with round arches, modillioned cornice
and ogival cupola with finial; bell.
South front has plat band raised to centre. Segmental-headed
entrances, one to each end with deeper curve, most with
battened stable doors. Central large blocked segmental-headed
opening, with 2 inserted entrances with hopper fanlights and
pitching door above; flanking ventilation patterns, that to
left over entrance with hopper fanlight and high
segmental-headed window with 2-light small-paned casement to
right; that to right over entrance with overlight in form of
3-light small-paned casement over plain battened door.
Right end has entrance flanked by windows with rubbed brick
flat arches with key blockss, and 2 1st floor windows with
cambered arches over, all with 6/6 horned sashes; similar
entrance and flanking windows to left of centre with C20
casements, and segmental-headed window above entrance with key
block over 6/6 sash; left end is altered, with timber lintels
to openings: 8/8 horned sash in blocked entrance and large
casement replacing 2 blocked windows, the 1st floor with 3
windows with small-paned casements. Ends have external brick
stairs pierced by parabolic arches; that to west has inserted
entrance under stair and altered entrance to left, 1st floor
segmental-headed entrance with overlight and small
segmental-headed entrance to left; that to east has moulded
key block to arch, 1st floor entrance and small inserted
window.
INTERIOR: noted as having loose boxes to each end of north
side; loose boxes to centre and right south side open off
passage; timber partitions and doors, some rebuilt partitions
to south side right end. Still in use as stable.
