Farmhouse with attached former malthouse. C17 and early C18
with late C18 or early C19 refronting and C20 alterations.
Coursed blue lias rubble with brick refronting; steeply
pitched old tile roof with brick stack to front of ridge stack
and end and lateral stacks; malthouse has slate roof.
PLAN: L-plan: double-gabled wing with attached malthouse.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; 2-window range with lower 3-storey
malthouse, due to slope of ground. Plat band with blue headers
over ground floor; top dentiled brick cornice; large stone
buttress with tile off-sets. Ground floor has window in
lean-to projection to left of buttress and segmental-headed
window to right; both have C20 small-paned casements. First
floor has segmental-headed windows, that to left with 3-light
pegged and leaded casement, that to right with C20 small-paned
casement. Lower wing to left has similar inner return.
Former entrance to right has rubbed brick flat arch with stone
key block over inserted C20 casement; segmental-headed window
to left has 3-light casement, similar window above has leaded
casement; end stack with 2 diagonal shafts.
Malthouse has blocked segmental-headed entrance and raking
buttress, small window to each end of each floor with pegged
casements or barred.
Left return has similar details to malthouse with 2 inserted
C20 garage doors; C20 lean-to outshut to house, which is
carried round rear elevation, which has projecting quoins and
C20 casements.
End of malthouse has round-headed entrance with tympanum over
heavy pegged frame and plank door; similar loading door to
first floor has segmental head with hoist over,
segmental-headed first-floor window and top 3-light window.
INTERIOR: some chamfered beams and stone back-to-back
fireplaces, one side has bressumer cut through for larger
window, off-set brick breast to first floor, some old doors,
one with ventilation slots and one with HL-hinges; roof has
collar trusses with trenched principals.
Malthouse has stone chamber from ground to attic with
first-floor catwalk; top gypsum floor and clasped purlins to
one side of roof; pulley mechanism and large timber hopper;
some stud partitioning and doorway with curved lintels,
possibly reused from cider mill.
