Boundary wall to SE of Bishops
Palace garden, adjacent to Tor
Street
GV II
Boundary wall containing Bishop's garden and wells. Not dated,
probably C18 or C19 with C20 repairs. Rubble, stone or
concrete plain copings. The main run of wall, forming the
boundary with Tor Street, rises to approx 2.5m height at the
left (S) end, following the downward slope of the road at this
point; after approx 9m there is a step down of approx 300mm,
and the wall continues, following slight curves in the road
line, until opposite No.15, Tor Street (qv), a total run of
approx 135m, including one set-back with plank door adjacent
to Palace Stream bridge (qv). At the left-hand end the wall
returns to the SW corner of the moat, in a run of approx 110m,
with a short return at an obtuse angle towards the moat. There
are 2 small steps in the coping level towards the E end, and
the wall is generally approx 2.5m high. Near the W end is a
broad pair of plank gates. At the right-hand end the wall
returns towards the E end of the Cathedral, running approx
90m, and in part forming a southern boundary to The Rib (qv);
some of this section of the wall appears to be of late C20
rebuilding.
The wall is important as a townscape element, particularly in
forming the W side enclosure to Tor Street as it enters the
urban confines of the city.
