House in row. Early C17 or earlier, mid C18 facade, late C19
dormers. Rendered and colourwashed, double Roman clay tile
roof, brick chimney stacks.
PLAN: an L-plan layout, with long rear wing to the left with
low ceilings, of early date, open well staircase at junction
of this with main front range, which is of single room depth,
and small internal courtyard.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, attics, and cellar: 5 bays. Sash windows
with exposed boxes, of 12 panes, to centre bay of ground floor
is a Regency pattern 6-panel door with decorative rectangular
transom-light over, encased in moulded timber surround, with
flat hood. 3 gabled dormers with 2-light casements and splayed
glazed cheeks. At basement level are 2 lights in recessed
chamfered surrounds, and with grilles. Each party wall has a
raised and coped verge and a brick stack.
INTERIOR: ground floor has smaller room to right with 2
transverse beams, also kitchen and a new wing, the main room
to the left has dado panelling, 6-panel doors, and a large
early C17 chamfered beam. In the rear wing is a 4-light
recessed chamfer stone mullioned casement facing a courtyard.
The staircase is a fine Jacobean design with splat balusters
and deep moulded string. At first floor the principal bedroom,
with 3 windows, is entered through a C17 door with 3
horizontal panels, and the adjoining room has 2 deep recesses,
and a moulded and reeded fire surround; a rear room has C18
dado panelling and doors.
The property backs onto Nos 13 and 15, Market Place (qqv), and
incorporates a part flying freehold; the cellar is part of the
Market Place property.
In the C19 this was a school, later became 5 flats, and is now
one house.
