Walls linking the west cloister
porch of the Cathedral

Boundary walls in the south east corner of Cathedral Green.
Medieval, with later modifications. Local stone rubble, and
Doulting stone ashlar. In 3 sections: that extending westwards
from the west cloister porch of the Cathedral (qv) is about
3.5m high, with battlemented top, and in centre a 1980s
gateway into the Mary Mitchell Garden, the section southwards
to Penniless Porch (qv) has a plain coping, with small sweep
up to the porch tower, under which is a C20 segmental arched
opening with a late C20 wrought-iron gate, giving access to
the office premises attached to the east face of the tower
(No.16, Market Place: qv). The walling is an important visual
element in the corner of the Cathedral Green.
