GV II
Former toll-house, now house. c1842-3, extended c1900. Front
portion in ashlar stonework, rear in red brickwork with ashlar
dressings, hipped Welsh slate roofs with wide eaves on
brackets, ashlar and brick chimneys.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, roadside elevation 3 bays, plinth,
pilaster strips to corners and between each bay, eaves band.
Paired semicircular arched windows with central plain stone
mullions, imposts with arches, the infill casements being
8-pane. Central lower bay the former front door, with pointed
arched head and otherwise matching details, now filled with a
2-light window over which is a wrought-iron bracket for the
former fee-board. Matching single-bay returns, the lower
window both sides being 3-light. Rear addition has plain sash
windows, with a single-storey canted bay with hipped roof on
west side. Present entrance on west side.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: extending from the south-west corner an
ashlar stone wall approx 1.9m high and approx 15m long, with
coping and plain gateway near house, adding to setting of the
building and the streetscape generally. This gatehouse
presumably built when the tollgate was moved from Southover to
here in 1842-43.
