GV II
House with shop, now shop with flats over. Late C18 facade to
building with C16 fragments. Rendered and colourwashed, clay
pantiled gabled roof behind parapet, brick chimney stack.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, 2 wide bays. Later C20 shop front to
ground floor, with double doors in deep recess off-centre to
right, plain rendered fascia and surround. At first floor
level are two large composite sash windows in moulded eared
architraves, having 5+15 +5 panes, the centre units have
semicircular heads and some radial bars in top tier. At second
floor level are 5 plain sash windows in plain surrounds, with
a shallow cornice and parapet over. Lead stackhead and
downpipe to left hand side.
The return west elevation to Guard House Lane has a plinth and
is plain rendered. At first floor level are two very small
lancets, with a simple casement between, and there are a plain
sash window and a casement on the second floor. The rear wall
is rendered, with steel sash, and with 5 small gables; C20
addition to the rear.
INTERIOR: the ground floor cleared for shop, no historic
features remain. The upper floors only partly accessible; at
the rear, from a side entry, is an C18 dog-leg staircase with
turned balusters, rectangular newels, moulded handrail, and
solid string. The rear wall at first floor includes a
4-centred stone arch with chamfer, to a recess, and the
ceiling has 4 painted roundels including 'W 1885'.
