The Hollies (No.14) and Hollies
Cottage, and attached boundary wall
and gateway GV II House at north end of row. Late C18, some earlier fabric to
the rear. Rendered over rubble, Welsh slate mansard roofs with
hips to south side and front projection, coped gable to north,
rendered chimney stacks.
PLAN: to left is a one room, double-depth unit, then, brought
forward to the right a single room unit with entrance hall and
staircase, backed by a long narrow wing, incorporating Hollies
Cottage.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics, 2 bays with one bay
projection. Plinth, cornice, plain parapet, sash windows in
plain architraves, 12-pane below and 9-pane above, with one
set matching windows in the north return of the projection.
Entrance in projection, a 6-panel door in plain architrave.
Segmental-arched roof dormers, that to projection having
9-pane segmental top sash window, the others 2-light casement
windows. Double gable to north, and lower 2-storey extension
to rear.
INTERIOR: the entrance hall has, to the right, a fine C18
dog-leg stair with turned balusters and open treads; the
cornice has rosettes. The front room, left, has a marble
pilastered fireplace, a decorative frieze and cornice, and
panelled double doors to the rear room which has an Adamesque
fireplace, and a palmette frieze with cornice. The rear room,
right, has rough beams, probably C17 or earlier C18, and a
3-panel door. At the first floor are several early 2-panel
doors. The main rear room has an C18 fireplace with eared
architrave and dentils, and a smaller room to the right has an
early 2-light casement.
At second floor, back, is a 16-pane sash. Most of the sash
windows have shutters. The rear wing, slated, and with two
brick stacks, incorporates Hollies Cottage, which has pegged
roof trusses, one lower room with 2 large beams with chamfers,
and a cellar with brick barrel vault.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: extending from the NW corner is a length
of stone rubble boundary wall as high as first floor sills,
with plain end pier and stone coping, having a small gateway
with boarded door, forming an important part of the street
