Boundary walls. 1900, by H Dare Bryan. Squared local stone
rubble, with ashlar copings continued as bands under upstand
piers; cast and wrought-iron gates. The low (approx 750mm
high) walls have flush chamfered copings, and at intervals are
broad flush piers, raised at the centre and with ball finials,
also with flush copings of the same kind. There are 11 such
piers in all from approx 1.6m to approx 2m high, reflecting
the changes in street level; between these were originally
iron railings, removed in 1940. At the N end, in Portway, is a
single gate with standards.
The wall returns to Portway Avenue in a quadrant curve, and
here there is a broad pair of gates and standards between 2 of
the piers, with return dwarf walls to a short flight of 1+3
stone steps.
