II

Cinema. 1935, by ES Roberts. Flemish bond brickwork with stone copings and dressing; roof concealed behind high parapets. 'Moderne' style.
EXTERIOR. entrance bay is set at an angle between two return walls. This has a canopy set over glazed doors, above which is a vertical 'REGAL' sign in stained glass set in heavy ashlar architrave stepped back, in Art Deco style at top, and flanked by alternate brick and stone quoins. Walls project forward at an angle from the entrance bay to meet rusticated quoins and return walls, which have 3-light horizontal steel windows with stained glass arranged in 'moderne' geometric patterns. INTERIOR: particularly notable for the rare survival of its original colouring, decoration and fittings. The foyer has cornicing in pastel shades. The auditorium includes original seating, Art Deco fountain grilles flanking the proscenium arch, with polychromatic frieze over. Gold-coloured acoustic plaster to walls, which are articulated by Art Deco pilasters I to cornicing. Concealed lighting.
Details of this rare surviving scheme can be found in 'Ideal, Kinema and Studio'.
