GV II

House in row. Late C16 origins with C19 facade. Local stone
rubble, roughly coursed clay pantiled roof with coped gable to
south, abutment to north, brick chimney stack. Originally a
3-unit cross-passage plan with stack backing onto passage and
services integrated into adjoining property; small wing to
rear left.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 4 bays, varied fenestration. Lower bay 2
has a 16-pane sash window under a timber lintel, the remaining
windows mostly plain casements with single horizontal glazing
bar, of 3 lights to upper bay 2 and both levels bay 4, and
2-light upper bay 1, the windows to bay 3 both cross-glazed
casements. To lower bay 1 a chamfered 4-centre archway with
shaped C19 six-panel door, footscraper to right.
INTERIOR: single depth, 2 rooms, with some later subdivision.
The ground floor has some stone flagged flooring, and large
chamfered and stopped beams, and at first floor are 3 collar
trusses with chamfered and tenoned in-line purlins and pegged
through principals. One upper room has a small stone fireplace
with ovolo-mould surround, and 6-panel early door. Staircase
is a transverse C20 flight.
The property was once owned by the Dean and Chapter, and
records are said to date from 1558. The name presupposes a
former inn.
