House (reputed to have been dower house to Whitton Court,
Whitton (qv)) then 3 houses, now single house. Late C16 and
C17 with C19 extensions. Painted timber-framed first floor
with brick and render infill panels, rubble stone ground
floor. Plain-tiled roof. Off-centre C17 brick ridge chimney
with spurred shafts, C19 integral brick verge stack. H-plan of
main framed range with north and south cross wings each of
which is extended.
EXTERIOR: 2-storey with attic. Entrance front to west: to left
is framed gable of north cross wing with stone rubble ground
floor with framing above. Square framing consists of jowled
posts, braces, cambered tie beam with weathering board, twin
struts, collar with twin raking struts. Single trenched-purlin
roof evident. 2-light casement at first floor with leaded
lights. C20 oak-boarded front door with leaded side lights.
Stone single-storey extension with gabled roof to extreme left
with 2 C19 2-light casements.
Central 2-bay main range: first-floor timber frame of girding
beam, posts, middle rails and studs. 2-light oak casement with
leaded lights to left bay over metal 3-light casement to
ground floor. Former framed window position evident in wall to
the right bay over plain boarded door with brick
segmental-arched lintel. To right is framed gable of south
cross wing: first-floor framing of rectangular panels with
girding beam, jowled posts, studs and middle rails, jettied
tie beam with triple ovolo-chamfer with run-out stops set on
ornamental carved brackets, vertical struts with middle rails,
collar with twin raking struts. Struts frame bricked-up attic
window with leaded lights still evident. C19 2-light casement
inserted in original framed window opening to first floor and
C20 metal casement inserted to left. Metal 3-light casement to
ground floor.
Right-hand return forming the south cross wing: 3 framed bays
of rectangular panels at first floor on stone rubble ground
floor. Framing of girding beam, posts, middle rails and studs,
and 2 original framed window positions. Two 2-light casements,
one in original framed window position. 2 ground-floor 2-light
casements flank plain boarded door with brick segmental arch.
Cross wing gable-end return rebuilt in C19 brick and masked by
single-storey stone rubble extension. Rear of south
cross-wing: single bay of timber framing on ground-floor stone
wall as for opposite side. C19 casement window at each floor.
Stone rubble extension to left.
Rear of main range: 2 framed bays on stone ground-floor wall
as for the opposite side. 2 original framed window positions
with the right-hand position infilled with 2-light metal
casement. Plain boarded ground-floor door with brick segmental
arch to left. Gable-end of north cross wing to right with
first-floor framing rebuilt with painted brick leaving only
jowled posts remaining. 2-light casement with brick segmental
arch at first floor and 2 at ground floor. Return end of the
north cross wing masked by C19 stone extension.
INTERIOR: first-floor timbers reputed to have simple red
painted decoration in the form of lines and scrolls, and
squares on doors to represent panels.
