GV II*

Orangery. c1820, for Thomas Botfield, ironmaster. Cast-iron
and glass, stone piers and rendered brick rear walls. PLAN:
rectangular on plan, orangery built against a tall brick
heated back wall with an arch through to a barrel-vaulted
glazed transept at the rear with brick walls; in the angles at
the back are hovels, that to the north having a furnace in the
basement.
EXTERIOR: the orangery has 9 bays with stone piers to the
central doorway and at the corners. The bays are divided by
the cast-iron main frames, the bays with small panes and iron
glazing bars. The sides and roof are similarly divided and the
roof has a semi-elliptical profile with curved ribs and glass.
The doors have margin glazing bars. The Orangery at Hopton
Court is a rare and particularly fine example of an early C19
conservatory.
