GV II

Stables now house and store. Mid-late C18 with C19 extension
and C20 conversion. Brick, with parapet and modillioned
cornice to front and cogged brick eaves elsewhere, and hipped
tile roof with central bell turret of octagonal open arcade on
boarded plinth with lead cupola roof with ball finial and
weather-vane. Brick ridge stacks and integral eaves stack.
Part of L-shaped range with one wing (north) forming the
stables and one wing (west) forming house named The Rhyse.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. Stable front to east is 5-window range
with advanced central 3-window bay under pedimented parapet
with modillioned apex (qv Ashford Hall). To right (to the
stables) are 3 C18 mullioned windows with leaded-light iron
casements and gauged brick lintels, ground floor with 2
mullion and transom windows with leaded-light iron casements
and a double mullion window with segmental arch. To left are 2
C20 metal casements with segmental-arches (to the Rhyse).
Clock face set within pediment. Right return side part
obscured by single-storey hipped and tiled extension. Steps to
first-floor boarded door.
Rear: to left an C18 mullion window with leaded-light metal
casements, to right a boarded doorway opening. Ground-floor
carriage entrance with timber door frame, now with C20 garage
doors, and segmental arch over. Front of the wing forming The
Rhyse: 5-window range of C20 casements with central hipped
tiled door canopy over C20 door. 2-window range of C20
casements to rear.
INTERIOR: king-post truss roof. Single-finger clock mechanism
by George Payne of Ludlow dated 1798.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: wall with gatepiers: brick, the walls
with ashlar coping, the gatepiers with pyramidal ashlar caps.
Walls form enclosed courtyard to rear of the Stables and The
Rhyse.
