House and malthouse, now pair of attached houses. Malthouse is
C17 or earlier, extended or partly rebuilt in late C17, partly
refaced in C18. Malthouse Cottage added in early C19. Red
brick in English garden wall bond and Flemish bond, partly
exposed timber-frame at rear and stone coursed rubble at rear
of Malthouse Cottage. Plain-tile roof with brick coped gable
ends. Brick axial ridge stack, projecting and integral brick
gable-end stacks.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: malthouse to right of south-east front. 2
storeys, 3-window range, with large C18 3-light mullion
windows with central opening lights and glazing bars in brick
segmental-arched openings. Brick string courses at first and
attic floors, doorway to right of centre with small segmental
fanlight, cyma-moulded door frame and plank door.
Malthouse Cottage on left: single-window range with 3-light
mullion casements with small panes and brick segmental arches;
boarded door on right also with brick segmental arch. Casement
and attic casements in left gable-end with brick segmental
arches. Dovecote ledges, 3 string courses, and attic casement
in attic gable to right gable-end.
Rear: Malthouse on left has casements with glazing bars and
C17 ovolo-moulded 5-light mullion window on first floor, all
with segmental arches; exposed timber-frame on left above
stone rubble single-storey rear wing. Stone rubble rear wall
of Malthouse Cottage set back on right with single-storey
brick outshut.
INTERIOR: cyma-chamfered bridging beams and cyma-moulded door
frames to ground floor. Chamfered bridging beams with stepped
ogee-chamfer stops to first floor. Double trenched purlin roof
with diagonally-set ridge. 2 attic trusses with straight tie
beam interrupted by door posts, rails with struts, collar, and
twin raking struts. Chamfered doorways with ogee-chamfer
stops.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings, gates and gatepiers attached to
Malthouse Cottage and running across the front of the front
garden of each house. C19. Cast-iron. Plain spike-headed round
balusters with plain rails forming railings. Similar gates
with plain cross-brace. Tubular gate posts with rounded caps.
