Farmhouse. Probably C16, reduced and remodelled in C17-C18.
Stone rubble, possibly originally timber-framed. Plain-tile
roof with gabled and hipped ends. Large stone rubble lateral
stack with offsets at rear, and end stack, both with later
brick shafts. 3-room plan with outshut on right-hand (north)
end; hall and hall-chamber at centre with lateral stack at
back, kitchen to left with later rear lateral stack and
parlour at lower left (south) end with stairhall
partitioned-off at back.
PLAN: the extant 3-room plan is probably the main hall range
of what was originally a larger house, possibly with wings at
either end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics. Asymmetrical 4-window east
front. Ground-floor 3-light mullion transom casements, centre
(hall) window of 4 lights with cambered stone arch. 3-light
casements on first floor. Plank door to right of centre.
Outshut on right. At rear (west) various smaller casements,
some blocked, tall stair window on right and large projecting
stone rubble stack at centre with offsets, in front of
timber-framed attic gable; panelled door to right of centre.
INTERIOR: hall has intersecting moulded ceiling beams each
with 2 rolls flanked by zigzags and forming 9 panels with
roll-moulded joists (now ceiled). This panelled ceiling is
supported on large stop-chamfered axial beam set in about 0.75
metres from front wall and probably originally extended into
room to right (north). Large hall fireplace with C18
bowtell-moulded chimneypiece and shelf, stone jambs and
concealed timber lintel; late C19 iron range. Kitchen to north
has chamfered cross beam and joists with run-out stops and
brick fireplace with chamfered mantlebeam. Smaller parlour to
left (south) with chamfered axial beams with run-out stops and
C19 iron chimneypiece; partitioned-off at back for stair hall.
First-floor chambers have exposed square-panelled
timber-framed partitions and stop-chamfered ceiling beams.
4-bay roof enclosing attic chambers; 3 trusses with collar,
cambered tie beam, vertical struts, and framed doorways.
Chamfered intermediate truss with large stops on principals,
probably reused. Single trenched-purlin roof and straight wind
brace. Partly restored ridge and rafters.
