Upper House Farmhouse including storage range

Farmhouse. C16 and C18. C16 wing forming old range with
painted timber-frame with painted brick panel infill, and
stone rubble gables. Plain-tile roof. At gable end is a large
stone stack with sandstone-slate offsets and 2 diagonally-set
stone shafts capped with later brick shafts. C18 wing forming
new range with stone rubble, render, and brick. Old tile roof
with brick-coped gables and integral gable-end chimneys.
PLAN: L-shaped with 3-bay wing aligned east-west forming the
old range and C18 wing at right angles to the east forming the
new range.
EXTERIOR: old range north side has 3-framed bays of square
framing 3 panels high with braces at truss posts; posts and
middle rails. Boarded door and small casement to right-hand
bay, window openings at ground and first floor in middle bay,
casement to left bay. To right is projecting stone stack and
to extreme right is a stone agricultural storage range with
tiled roof. Left gable-end return: stone rubble gable end with
2-light casement at first floor and C20 casement at ground
level. South side: wall underbuilt in stone rubble. To left
are stone steps leading to boarded door. Right side masked by
projecting new range. Left side abuts single-storey
agricultural storage range.
New range west front: scattered fenestration of 8/8 and 4/8
sashes at both floors and 2 ground-floor fixed-light windows.
Boarded door to left under a lean-to porch. Openings with
brick segmental lintels. Gable-end returns have pair of
casements at attic level each side, one to north leaded. Rear
to east: rendered wall with all openings under cambered heads.
Central staircase windows of 4/8 sash with 8/8 sash below,
both set at landing heights. To right are 4/8 sashes at first
and ground floors. To left is 4/8 sash at first floor. To
ground-floor left is 6-panelled door with upper glazed panels.
INTERIOR: old range has single purlin roof with 4 closed
trusses. Diagonally-set ridge, straight wind braces with
cross-lapped joints at purlin. Trusses with cambered tie
beams, vertical struts and collar. Internal trusses have door
openings interrupting tie beam. West end truss built into
stack with tie beam trimmed for door under. Wattle and daub
infill survives internally. Central and west bays have
smoke-blackened timbers. Cross frames with jowled posts,
square framing and braces. Ground-floor bridging beam with
deep chamfer set on jowled post within cross-frame. Large
chamfered mantlebeam with run-out stops. New range has dogleg
staircase with shaped flat balusters.
