GV II*

Farmhouse. Dated 1690 on porch; enlarged and altered. Roughly
coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, remains of whitewash,
stone slate roof. Broad irregular L-plan formed by wide
single-depth 2-unit main range on east-west axis with very
wide rear wing.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and 4 windows (grouped 1:3); with a
stone-slate course over the ground floor to the right. In the
centre is a single-storey gabled porch with a dressed stone
lintel (apparently re-set) which has a panel at each end
containing raised lettering "IBM" and a stylised figure to the
left and "1690" to right; in front of the porch is a
semicircular step and a pebble pavement including a quartered
square pattern. To the left the ground floor has a 6-pane
hornless sashed window, and to the right a similar 6-pane sash
and a 4-pane horned sash. The 1st floor has a 2-light casement
to the left, 2 similar casements to the right and a narrow
1-light window further right. Large square gable chimneys with
cylindrical shafts, that to the left topping a prominently
extruded and stepped stack and that to the right corbelled.
The broad gable of the rear wing has a blocked 2-light
mullioned stair-window at ground floor to the right, a partial
course of through-stones above this, a square 4-pane sashed
window offset right of centre at 1st floor and the corbelled
base of a former apex chimney. To the left a tall square
chimney corbelled from 1st floor, with 2 slate courses and a
tall cylindrical shaft (its function in this position not
known).
INTERIOR: housepart to right (with C19 partition to form
entrance passage) has 2 lateral beams (boxed) and large C18
rectangular stone fireplace with a massive lintel which has
carving in the centre (possibly a stylised tree) and dentilled
cornice, and is furnished with a later C19 oven-and-boiler
range. Parlour to left has C18 fielded panel door with H-L
hinges, inserted stone partition wall parallel with rear wall,
and C18 curved corner cupboard; staircase, entered by C18 door
like that to parlour and formerly lit by blocked 2-light
mullioned window at half-landing, is dog-legged, with closed
string and turned balusters.
Apart from altered glazing to the windows, an unusually
complete example of a larger Dales farmhouse, retaining all
its cylindrical chimney shafts and good interior features.
Forms group with barn approx. 10m south-west (qv).
