Cage Farmhouse
II
Farmhouse with attached joiner's workshop. Probably earlier
C18, remodelled in later C19; recently slightly altered.
Slobbered roughly-coursed sandstone rubble with quoins (the
rear white-washed); graduated slate roof to house, with stone
slate lower courses at rear, stone slate to workshop.
Rectangular plan on east-west axis facing south, the house of
2 units and probably formerly of the transitional type with a
continuous outshut to the rear but now with the appearance of
a full double-depth type; with the workshop attached to the
west end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and 2 windows, symmetrical. The ground
floor has a doorway protected by a late C19 pitched slated
canopy with cusped barge-boarding underbuilt with a glazed
porch, and 2 rectangular windows each side now double-glazed,
and the upper floor has 2 similar windows above the inner of
these. Roof with oversailing eaves and verges, and gable
chimneys. Single-storey workshop to left with 2 large 16-pane
fixed windows. Rear: back door offset to east, now under
glazed porch; stairwindow to right of this, 2 oblong windows
at ground floor and 2 rectangular windows above, all
double-glazed like those at the front.
INTERIOR: housepart to left has 2 large chamfered lateral
beams (neither of oak), and fine C18 panelled partition to
parlour with fielded panels and dado rail; parlour has lateral
beam and full-height wainscot of similar fielded panelling,
the rear wall incorporating a round-headed alcove with fluted
pilasters and keyed moulded head. Lateral beam in kitchen to
rear of parlour. Dog-legged staircase with closed string,
square newels and turned balusters; and at 1st floor a fielded
panel partition between the main chambers incorporating
built-in wardrobes with shouldered panels (very similar to
Badger Dub, Garsdale CP, qv).
