East Banks Farmhouse
GV II
Farmhouse. Late C17 or early C18; altered. Slobbered rubble
with large quoins, stone slate roof. Broad T-plan formed by
single-depth 2-unit main range on east-west axis, facing
north, with a large rear outshut to the centre under a
catslide roof; and a lean-to addition at the left end.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys, 2 widely-spaced 1st-floor windows; with a
plinth, and a continuous weathered drip-course over the ground
floor. The ground floor has a square-headed doorway offset
slightly left of centre (protected by a light pitched canopy
on wooden struts); a square 8-pane sash to the left, with
vertical glazing bars only, and a rectangular fire-window
further left with fixed 9-pane glazing; and an oblong 3-light
casement to the right. Above each of the 2 principal windows
at ground floor is a square 8-pane sash like that at ground
floor. Corbelled chimneys at both gables, that to the left
square, more prominently corbelled and from a lower level than
that to the right. At the rear the outshut and 2nd bay are
back-to-earth at ground-floor level; the outshut has one
square window on each floor of its east side, and another
small window in the rear wall, and the rear of the 2nd bay has
a 2-light casement at 1st floor.
INTERIOR: stone partition wall immediately right of doorway,
C19 inserted partition to left of doorway; 2 lateral beams in
housepart to left, both boxed; no beams visible in kitchen to
right; dairy and staircase in rear outshut. A good example of
its type and date. Forms group with barn approx. 5m to west
(qv) and stable approx. 10m to north (qv).
