Barn approx. 15m east of Hacra
Farmhouse
GV II
Two barns and a shippon. Probably C17 and early C18, shippon
probably C19. Large roughly-coursed sandstone rubble with
quoins; stone slate roofs on 2 levels. Linear plan composed of
2 ranges with a short link between them, built end-to-end at
right-angles to a slope, on a north-south axis facing west;
with the shippon to the rear of the southern range.
EXTERIOR: the larger and higher range to the north, probably 5
bays, has a doorway at the north end with a humped monolith
lintel (a diagonal crack in the wall above this), a flight of
stone steps next to this doorway mounting to a square-headed
loft doorway with segmental monolith lintel, a chamfered
1-light window to the left of this; slit breathers on 2 levels
of the centre of the range; and at the southern end a fine
segmental-arched wagon doorway with chamfered dressed
surround, a square-headed doorway on a lower level next to the
corner, and small 2-light chamfered mullion window above to
the left of this. The north gable wall has a pair of chimney
corbels at the apex. The link at the south end, one bay and 2
low storeys, slightly set back, has external steps to a loft
doorway, and a doorway under the steps. The lower south range,
3 bays, with random through-stones and small square breathers,
has a wagon doorway offset right with a shallow segmental head
and very long rubble voussoirs with a drip-band, a loading
doorway above to the left, and at the left end a small 1-light
window to the upper floor. The south gable wall has a small
blocked opening with rubble voussoirs (like the wagon
doorway). At the rear the north range has 2 loading doorways,
and its south bay is overlapped by the added full-height
lean-to shippon, which has doorways at the south end and 6
square windows in the side.
INTERIOR not inspected. Forms good group with Hacra Farmhouse
(qv).
