GV II

Bank barns. Probably early to mid C18, in 2 builds; altered.
Slobbered random rubble with through-stones and quoins, stone
slate roofs. L-plan formed by earlier 4-bay range on
north-south axis, at right-angles to slope, with shippon under
south end, and slightly later 4-bay range added to south end
of east side, parallel to slope, with shippon under hay barn;
plus 2 lean-to outbuildings added to the west side of the
earlier range. The west range has opposed wagon doorways in
the second bay, both with cambered oak lintels but that on the
east side (to higher ground) on a higher level and the
right-hand half of it blocked; full-height lean-to additions
flanking the west doorway (that on the left dilapidated and
roofless); and a shippon doorway in the south gable wall. The
other range has 3 shippon doorways in the south front and a
loading doorway above, and a wagon doorway in the rear wall.
INTERIOR: both ranges have 3 collar trusses, those in the west
range all made of pairs of re-used cruck timbers which have
stopped chamfer and the northern pair mounted in a tie-beam
which has joist housings. Shippons altered.
Forms a group with Hewthwaite Farmhouse (qv), barn to south
(qv), and stable to west (qv). Similar in plan and phasing to
barns at Burton Hill (qv) and Gap (qv).
