Moser Hill Farmhouse and attached
shippons

GV II

Farmhouse, with attached shippons. Late C17 or early C18, with
added outshut and shippons; altered. Mixed random rubble with
quoins, the front painted white; stone slate roof (with some
blue slate at the rear). Irregular L-plan formed by a
single-depth 2-unit main range on an east-west axis facing
south, with an outshut added to the rear, a shippon added to
the east end and a projected wing to the south of that.
EXTERIOR: the house, 2 storeys and 3 windows, with a stone
slate drip-course over the ground floor of the left half, has
a wide doorway in the centre protected by a low stone porch
with monopitched roof, an oblong 2-light casement to the left
and a square 8-pane sash to the right (with vertical glazing
bars only), and 3 small irregular casements irregularly
disposed at 1st floor. All the casements have small panes.
Gable chimney to the left, with 2 stone slate bands, and
another to the right (now at the junction with the shippon).
The rear has a 16-pane window at ground floor of the west bay,
a small 4-pane window above this, and an added 2-storey
outshut to the east bay. Shippon to east has gable wall with
doorway near each corner and loading door above; and attached
to its south side a further shippon which has a wagon doorway
at the junction and a large outshut next to that.
INTERIOR: thick stone partition wall to right of doorway, C19
inserted partition to left. The housepart to the left has a
large chamfered lateral beam carrying heavy square joists on
the east side (i.e. between it and the stone partition), and a
secondary axial beam on the west side carrying smaller joists.
(These features suggest that the house was formerly one of the
sleeping-loft type, like Acre, qv, and Huds qv). Stone
staircase in rear corner of housepart. First floor has old
plank partition over housepart and 3 batten-and-board doors
with wooden snecks and pull-handles.
Forms group with barn approx. 4m to north-west (qv).
