GV II*
Large farmhouse. Probably later C17, altered in C18 or early
C19. Slobbered random rubble with a prominent plinth of large
masonry, irregular quoins, stone slate roof. T-plan formed by
single-depth 2-unit range on east-west axis facing south, with
added rear wing.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys (the top storey very low), 3 windows,
almost symmetrical. The ground floor has a square-headed
doorway with a pegged oak door protected by a low gable porch
which has a square-headed outer doorway with a drip-band, and
a triangular set of pigeon holes in 5 tiers (the top hole
blocked); and a stone slate drip-band in the wall above the
porch; two square 9-pane fixed windows to the left, the 2nd
with one opening pane in the top left corner and a wide rubble
relieving arch above it, and the other probably an enlarged
fire-window; and to the right a larger square 16-pane sashed
window with a similar relieving arch above it. The 1st floor
has 3 square fixed windows with opening panes like that below,
each with a similar but slightly smaller relieving arch above
it (but not centred). The top storey, which has slightly
different masonry with crisp slightly-raised quoins
(suggesting that the eaves have been raised) has one narrow
and 2 square 1-light windows, all very small and blocked.
Large gable chimneys, that to left extruded. Added rear wing
partly covering stair-window.
INTERIOR: lateral stone partition wall to right of doorway (to
ground floor only), and inserted partition to left. Housepart
to left has 2 lateral beams (papered, with under-drawn
ceiling), and oak spiral staircase off rear corner (now
enclosed by passage); former parlour to right (now partitioned
to form dairy to rear) has C17 moulded plaster over-mantel
with rampant lion among leaves. First floor has old floor
boards pegged to the joists beneath, and muntin-and-plank
partition (now papered). Attic has corbelled chimney over
funnelled recess of former smoke-hood. The house retains a
remarkably unaltered interior. Forms group with barn approx.
30m south (qv) and barn approx. 60m south-west (qv).
