162-1/5/270 Abbot Holme House (west) and
attached stable to west and barn to
east
GV II
Farmhouse and stable, with attached barn or cart-shed.
Probably late C17 or early C18; altered. Roughly-coursed mixed
rubble with quoins, mostly white-washed, graduated slate roof
(with 4 courses of stone slate to the stable). East-west axis,
facing south, with stable to west and attached barn to east.
EXTERIOR: the house has a single-depth 2-unit plan plus a rear
outshut to the 1st bay. 2 storeys and 3 windows, almost
symmetrical: with a square-headed doorway offset left and
protected by a simple stone-slab porch, a square 6-pane sash
close to the left side of this, a 4-pane sash above each of
these openings, and one similar 4-pane sash on each floor some
distance to the right. Square chimney at junction with stable
to left and overlapping it (indicating that it is either
corbelled or extruded); gable chimney to right. (Displacement
of the windows to the left of the porch, away from the end
which has the square chimney and towards the doorway, suggests
that formerly there was a fire-window to the left.) Continued
to the left is the stable, which has through-stones, a very
small square window at ground floor, and a segmental-headed
doorway in the gable wall with rubble voussoirs. Attached to
the right-hand end and slightly set back is a 2-bay barn or
cart-shed of dry-jointed rubble, which has a shallow
segmental-arched wagon doorway with rubble voussoirs.
REAR: deep full-height outshut to 1st bay of house, with
catslide roof; low lean-to loose-box built in angle with this;
and flight of steps in angle with this, leading to loft
doorway of stable.
INTERIOR: not inspected. Forms group with Abbot Holme House
(east) (qv) and with Abbot Holme Bridge (qv).
