Low Hollins Farmhouse and attached garden wall
GV
II
Farmhouse with attached garden wall. Probably early to mid C18
(the garden wall later); altered and recently restored.
Coursed mixed rubble with large irregular quoins, graduated
slate roof. Double-depth double-fronted plan, built with its
back towards the lane.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic, the south front now with 4
windows at 1st floor but originally 2:1:2, symmetrical; with a
stone-slate band over the 1st floor, the centre pitched for a
former upper storey of the porch. The remaining single-storey
porch, gabled, has a square-headed outer doorway with moulded
surround and stone side bench; it formerly had an upper storey
with dovecot (date of removal not known). Both floors have
4-pane top-hung casement windows imitating sashes, all with
monolith lintels, and patched masonry in the centre of the 1st
floor shows the position of a doorway to the former dovecot in
the porch. Gable chimneys. Each gable wall has 2 small attic
windows; and abutting the 1st floor of the left (west) gable
wall the upper floor of a wing to the associated barn (qv)
forms a covered entry from the lane. Rear (to lane) has
stone-slate band over 1st floor interrupted in the centre by
the lower of 2 stair-windows, a doorway to the right of this,
wide 6-pane windows at ground floor and 4-pane windows at 1st
floor (all like those at the front).
INTERIOR: both floors are partitioned only by panelling,
forming at ground floor a large housepart to the right with
dairy to rear, and a small unheated parlour to the left with
kitchen to rear, and at 1st floor 2 large chambers to the
front and 2 small ones to the rear: C17-style plank-and-muntin
panelling to the rear (including the staircase and doors), and
larger C18 fielded panelling to the front (also including
doors); cupboard in panelled partition of rear right chamber.
Also: original stone fireplace lintel in housepart (ex situ
C18 fireplace in kitchen); dog-legged staircase to full
height, with closed string, square newels, turned balusters
and moulded handrail; lateral beam in front right chamber,
with cyma-stopped chamfer; roof of 3 pegged collar trusses
with 3 pairs of trenched purlins.
GARDEN WALL: drystone rubble approx. 1 " metres high, attached
to south front corners, enclosing square garden.
Forms group with attached barn (qv).
