High Branthwaite Farmhouse

GV II

Farmhouse. Probably early C18, altered in C19. Slobbered
rubble with large quoins, roof of graduated stone slates and
some blue slates in the lower courses. Rectangular
double-depth 4-room plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and now 3 windows (but probably formerly
5), with the porch slightly offset left and the windows
strongly so. The gabled porch, with slightly-swept roof, has a
segmental-headed opening, a blocked peep-window in the left
side, and stone side benches. The ground floor has a square
8-pane hornless sash to the left and a similar but wider
10-pane sash to the right, both with vertical glazing bars
only. The 1st floor has 4-pane sashes above these, and to the
right of that on the left is a square window with the stools
of a former mullion, and above the porch the outline of
another former 2-light mullioned window is detectable. Gable
chimneys with stone slate cornices. Left gable wall has
through-stones on 3 levels, stone-slate bands on 2 levels, 2
small 1-light windows at ground floor and one similar attic
window; right-hand gable has similar attic window. Rear:
lean-to porch offset right, formerly mullioned window right of
this with double-chamfered surround but now with lowered sill
and 4-pane glazing, a 2-light double-chamfered mullioned
window above the porch, 2 vertically-aligned oblong
stair-windows in the centre (upper with 8 fixed panes), and
oblong windows on each floor to the left, the lower of 3
lights with wooden mullions and small panes and the upper of 6
panes with one opening. Most of these windows have wooden
lintels protected by dripstones.
INTERIOR: housepart to left and parlour to right, with
kitchen, staircase and dairy to rear of these; lateral beam
with cyma-stopped chamfer (end exposed beside staircase but
otherwise boxed); firehood bressumer parallel with gable wall
in kitchen; stone shelving in dairy; dog-legged staircase with
closed string, turned balusters, square newels and
muntin-and-plank panelled side walls; original doors; attic
with 2 pegged collar trusses (carpenter's marks I and II) and
2 pairs of trenched purlins. Interesting example of full
double-depth plan combined with pre-C18 features.
