GV II
Group of farm buildings, largely derelict and partly ruinous
at time of inspection (April 1994). Probably early C19 in more
than one build, parts possibly designed by George Webster of
Kendal (who was responsible for much of Ingmire Hall, qv); and
re-using some C17 material. Coursed and random mixed rubble
(sandstone and blue ragstone), with quoins; graduated slate
roofs on several levels (but parts collapsed). Built partly
back-to-earth on north-facing slope concealing it from Ingmire
Hall.
PLAN: irregular plan composed of a small bank barn on an
east-west axis facing north, with a shippon wing attached at
right-angles to the left half (on a slightly lower level), a
smaller parallel store attached to the east side of this, and
an unusual concave curved stable range carried round from the
east side of this and linked at its north-east end to the side
of a small ruinous barn.
EXTERIOR: the 4-bay bank barn has a segmental-headed wagon
doorway to the 3rd bay, and a loading door immediately above
flanked by a pair of square breathers; its west gable has a
carved stone plaque with a quatrefoil containing a mask
(probably ex situ); and the interior contains 3 roof trusses
made of re-used timbers (probably cruck blades). The west side
wall of the attached shippon wing has a large square-headed
loft doorway (like a wagon door) with an oak lintel (and the
left jamb damaged); the south gable wall has a large
round-headed doorway with dressed chamfered surround and a
drip-mould surmounted by a re-set datestone (1632), and a
blank medallion in the gable; and the interior has cattle
stalls on both sides. The curved single-storey stable range
has segmental-headed stable doorways with plank stable-doors
furnished with strap hinges, alternating with segmental-headed
windows with glazing bars; and a monopitched roof; the centre
of the rear wall is partially collapsed. The barn, which forms
a projecting wing at the east end,, has a small window and a
loading door, and is now roofless. These buildings are
included for their association with Ingmire Hall, the unusual
design of the stable, and the re-used C17 features.
