GV II

School with schoolhouse and offices, now house. Mid C19 with
C20 alterations. For the 12th Duke of Norfolk. Coursed
millstone grit with ashlar dressings and Welsh slate roofs
with coped gables, kneelers and ball finials. Tall square
stone stacks.
STYLE: Jacobean Revival.
PLAN: E-plan.
EXTERIOR: single storey with 2 storey house and offices to
east. Chamfered plinth and sill band.
South front has 10 windows arranged 1:3:2:3:1. Projecting
gabled side wings with large 3-light chamfered mullion windows
and above single narrow lights. Projecting gabled central wing
has two 2-light chamfered mullion windows and above armorial
shield with linking stepped hoodmould. Either side recessed
wings have three 2-light and 3-light windows. Opposing single
doorways to wings with 4-centred arch door surrounds. All
windows have stone mullions and transoms, some with 2 sets of
transoms, generally wooden casements, but some with iron
astragals. Single-storey gabled wing to left with corbelled
chimney stack to apex, single 4-centred arch doorway with C20
door and window to left.
Left return has central 3-light and flanking single light
chamfered mullion and transom windows.
Rear elevation with similar detailing and some C20 alteration.
Right return to schoolhouse and offices has irregular
fenestration. Schoolhouse to left has two 2-light mullion
windows to each floor and between single 4-centred arch
doorway with ashlar surround. To right 3-light chamfered
mullion and transom window to offices.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
