Buckenham House
GV II*
House; now offices and two shops. c1540, with rear wing of
early C17; main range refronted, raised and re-roofed c1745;
wing raised in early C19, further alterations later in C19;
converted to shops 1930; restored 1982. Original house
probably for Richard Buckenham. Timber frame encased in brick
with plain tile roof and brick end stacks.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and dormer attic; 6-window front.
Double-leaf panelled door to left of centre in pedimented
Gibbs surround. Two 6/6 unhorned sashes left, three to right,
all under gauged skewback arches and all restored. On first
floor, six 6/6 unhorned sashes under gauged skewback arches.
Corbelled and roll-moulded eaves cornice. Four hipped dormers
fitted with 2-light casements. Railings protecting cellar
steps reinstated 1990.
Rear: wing has sash and casement windows, and hipped roof.
2-storey canted bay window added to rear of main range.
INTERIOR: cellar: English bond brick; two blocked fireplaces,
chamfered bridging beams and access steps to rear yard.
Ground floor: c1745 staircase has turned bobbin balusters,
column newel posts, moulded ramped and wreathed handrail: dado
rail and large frame panelling to stairwell, the panelling
stencilled with floral designs.
North room has heavy mid C16 unmoulded bridging beams and
joists with multiple roll-mouldings and punched diamond
inserts at stops. C19 fire surround with Greek key frieze and
motto: DOE YE NEXTE THYNGE. South room has C19 dentillated
plaster frieze. Main internal doorways C18 with 6 panels and
moulded surrounds. Roof of principal rafterss, 2 tiers
staggered butt purlins and collars. Remains of former roof
line visible.
