Hotel. Original building late C18, heightened in 1826, bay
windows added c1907; extensions to both sides mid C19; late
C19 extensions at rear; further extension at front 1938, by JA
Sherman. Gault brick; hipped, pyramidal or flat roofs of
slate; brick stack to 1938 extension: rear wing of painted
brick with pantile roof.
EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; original front of 3 windows, flanked by
1-bay extensions: further C20 extension to right has 4-window
front. Original building has half-glazed door and 8-vaned
overlight recessed in centre beneath wrought-iron balustrade.
On each side are full height square bay windows beneath
segmental pediments: windows are tripartite horned sashes with
4/4, 6/6, 4/4 glazing bars. First floor has French window
under painted gauged arch in centre: on second floor, one 6/6
horned sash in centre.
Extension to left has flat carriage arch on ground floor; on
first floor is canted bay window fitted with horned sashes
with 2/2, 6/6, 2/2 glazing bars; on second floor, one 6/6
horned sash.
Extension to right has canted right return. Ground floor has
9/9 horned sash windows under gauged skewback arches, two to
front, one to return. First and second floors each have one
6/6 horned sash under gauged skewback arches and with
wrought-iron balconies to front. Windows on return are 4/4
horned sashes, similarly treated. Deep bracketed eaves.
Further right, C20 extension has shallow canted bay window
with 3 9/9 horned sashes and flanked by similar sashes either
side. On upper floors, windows are arranged in two pairs, 9/9
horned sashes on first floor, on second floor 6/6 horned
sashes.
Rear: 2-storey C18 wing and late C19 3-storey additions.
INTERIOR: to right of entrance hall, pedimented door with
decorative carved detail: egg and dart frieze to entrance
hall. Late C19 cast-iron staircase balustrade with ramped
wooden handrail. Lift installed and rear staircase with swept
handrail inserted around shaft in 1938.
