Public house. 1903, by Heaton and Ralph of Wigan. Red stock
brick in English garden wall bond (3:1), with dressings of
orange terracotta and faience, graduated slate roofs. L-plan
on corner site, plus a wing to the left. Free Renaissance
style, in an arrestingly bold corner composition.
EXTERIOR: the 3-storey 3-bay main range is symmetrical, with
full-height canted bay windows under shaped gables flanking
the entrance bay. The doorway has a surround with large
attached Ionic columns, a moulded round-headed archway with
alternating raised voussoirs, the keyblock breaking into a
large panel bearing the name of the hotel with its date,
supported by a swan-neck pediment; above the doorway is a
single window on each floor, that at 2nd floor a keyed oculus.
The flanking canted bays have windows with moulded
architraves, those at ground floor with etched glazing
lettered "News Room" and "Commercial Room" respectively, and
those on the upper windows sashed (top leaves only with
glazing bars, in the Queen Anne manner). Gable walls corbelled
and much embellished. The wing to the left is a single-storey
billiard room, with a canted bay window and a hipped roof. The
right-hand return (to Rylands Street) is in 2 portions: 3
storeys and 2 windows, with a shaped gable to the left and a
polygonal turret under a lead-clad cupola to the right,
doorway and window detailing similar to the front; and 2
storeys and 2 windows, with a ground-floor bay. Roof with
dentilled 4-light dormer.
INTERIOR almost intact: elaborate central counter with reeded
pilasters, decorative panels below and open above, with
dividing columns and cornice; door surrounds and glazed
partitions; fireplaces with overmantels and tiled surrounds;
console cornices.
