Farmhouse and attached barn. Probably C16 and C17, extended
later.
MATERIALS: stucco and render on probable cob and rubble.
rubble walls to barn; water-reed thatched roofs, hipped at the
corners and 2 hipped ends; rubble axial stack towards left of
front range, brick axial stack right of centre and brick stack
to front end of right-hand wing.
PLAN: built around rectangular courtyard with original 3-room
plan at the front, 2-room-plan wing at right angles behind
left-hand side that is linked to barn parallel at rear that
has heated domestic wing at right angles in front of its
right-hand side, just stopping short of the rear of the
original house.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; symmetrical fenestration to 5-window
range front. Early/mid C20 steel windows throughout, most with
leaded glazing; those to the principal elevations with wooden
shutters. Left-hand return is 4-window range with central
doorway with half-round-plan thatched open porch.
Rear is barn front with 3 windows and 3 doorways including
central round-arched doorway fronting a through-passage.
Courtyard has 3-window range to rear of main block, with C20
lean-to verandah to ground floor. Irregularly-disposed
openings to other elevations.
INTERIOR: not inspected, except to inspect large C16 or C17
fireplace to centre of front range spanned by oak lintel with
integral complex-moulded cornice. Barn has lapped and pegged
collar trusses.
Lower Collipriest Farmhouse is believed to have the largest
thatched roof in Devon. Merits further inspection to unravel
its plan development and phasing.
