Terrace of 23 houses. 1849-52. Garland and Christopher architects. Yellow stock brick with stucco banded rustication to ground floor and stucco dressings, slate roofs, some with dormers behind stucco parapet with cornice (broken in some places); stucco dressings. EXTERIOR: slightly projecting central 2-bay section (No.24) and flanking pedimented 4 bay sections (Nos 12, 14, 38 & 40). Brackets to cornices and pediments to these sections. 2 storeys, attic and basement, 2 bays each. Steps up to panelled doors with original fittings and oblong overlights, set in Classical doorcases with pilasters to plain entablature and cornice. Ground-floor sash windows with margin lights have keystones touching cornice; 1st-floor sash windows with glazing bars have square-headed stucco architraves, those to Nos 12, 14 & 24 and bays flanking Nos 38 & 40 with cornices, those to Nos 38 & 40 with pediments. Grand pediment to Nos 38 & 40 has beehive emblem set in tympanum (possibly connected with Royal Philanthropic Society Reformatory, who owned the estate), and 2 windows with keystones in pediment. INTERIOR: noted as having original stick-baluster staircases with wreathed handrails, panelled doors, shutters and fireplaces. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: wrought-iron area railings and some window boxes with anthemion panels.
