SOUTHWARK

TQ3476 HIGHSHORE ROAD 636-1/12/430 (South side) Nos.21 AND 23

II

2 semi-detached houses. Early C19. Stucco faced, traces of scoring in imitation of ashlaring. Hipped roof over the pair, that to No.21 of concrete tile and to No.23 of slate. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys over basement. 2 windows each. All openings are flat-arched except for basement windows which are segmental-arched. Steps up to entrances at far corners of the pair, each set under a Tuscan prostyle porch with responds; the entrance range is set well back from the centre ranges, where the windows are set in shallow rectangular full-height bays. Ground-floor windows with architraves and bracketed pediments, both treated in a very harsh and primitive fashion which is worthy of note. Similarly brusque detailing in a Greek Revival mode to the architraves on the 1st-floor windows. Windows above the entrances have flush eared architraves. Full-height recess on party wall. Stacks to party wall. Boxed eaves with paired brackets and simplified triglyph frieze. Sashes of original design, 6x6 to ground-floor and 3x3 to 1st-floor windows of centre ranges. INTERIOR: not inspected.
