II

Board school, now primary school, ancillary buildings and boundary wall. 1891. By TJ Bailey. For the School Board for London. MATERIALS: brick in English bond, with red brick dressing and black brick plinth; stone dressings. Roughcast gables to Caretaker's Cottage and hall to Bellwood Road. Roofs of tile. PLAN: school building rectangular in plan, halls stacked one upon the other in central block, flanked by stair entrance ranges, with classroom wings to either side. Caretaker's Cottage on corner of Lanbury and Ivydale Roads: 2-window range with 3 storeys to Ivydale Road; to left a single-storey building, rectangular in plan, with 2-window range to Ivydale Road and one-window range to right return. Single-storey hall to rear of the site along Bellwood Road; rectangular in plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys over basement. 20-window range to Ivydale Road, this elevation organised as a series of 6 bays, each with 3 windows in a tripartite pattern, the centre window of which, on the 2nd floor, is expressed as a Dutch gabled dormer. End bays receive a somewhat different treatment, described below. Separating the end bays from the 4 centre bays is a full-height, round-arched recess, under which are grouped stairwell lights. The windows at the top of the recess are segmental-arched; all other openings on this elevation are flat-arched. End bays on the Ivydale Road elevation are the most distinctive features of the design, terminating in a broad Dutch scroll gable with a terracotta cartouche, the letters "LSB" on the shield. Centre window in each of these gables has a hood moulding which finished in a pair of thin pilasters topped by an obelisk; several blocked windows in each gabled bay. Each of the centre bays is separated by a giant pilaster, terminating in an entablature, the upper level of which is level with the sills of the top-floor windows; each pilaster is, in addition, marked by a stone console bracket above the entablature. String courses of moulded brick and stone between ground and 1st floors, and between 1st and 2nd floors. Brick

cornice to eaves. There are moulded stacks between the 7th and 8th, 13th and 14th, and 17th and 18th bays. Boys' entrance on this elevation. Right return of 5-window range and left return of 4-window range, both repeating elements from the main elevation. The latter has one elliptical-arched recess with a flat-arched window near the corner; in elliptical-arched recess to left rear corner is a plaque in ornamental lettering: "SBL, Ivydale Road School, 1891". Rear elevation to yard has entrances for Girls and Infants; 4-part elevation, end bays of 3-window range, similar to those end bays on the Ivydale Road front. Centre block of 5-window range; full-height pilaster-buttresses frame each window in this block, setting back at the 2nd floor where an inverted console bracket helps to articulate the top floor. Above each 2nd-floor window, in crenellated parapet and on line with buttresses below is an urn. In centre of the roof on the ridge is an octagonal cupola topped by a thin spire and weathervane. Return of roof expressed above lower stages which sit between centre and end bays, stepping down to corners; as on the main elevation, these mark stairwells and entrances. Moulded stacks to inside corners of end bays. All glazing of original design. Caretaker's Cottage: 2-window range with 3 storeys. 2-storey buttress in centre of facing gable with a segmental-arched recess to either side, each pierced by flat-arched windows; flat-arched windows above, a stone string between 1st and 2nd floors. Right return with full-height chimney breast, divided into vertical sections in upper area, single-window range to rear; subsidiary stack to left return. To the left of the cottage a low building, made of the same materials except for the roof, which has been recovered in slate; design of rather utilitarian character, this structure is included for its historic interest, being constructed, according to a plaque, as a "Cookery Centre";. Single-storey hall to rear of the site along Bellwood Road, has pair of gabled dormers along long sides lighting a hall; segmental-arched windows. INTERIOR: retains original red and cream glazed tiles to ground, 1st and 2nd floors. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: brick perimeter wall bounding the site on Ivydale Road, returning to north and south.
